Nebraska

I have travel to and through Nebraska many times.  I decided this time I should create a post about my visit.  Settling the west has always intrigued me and I enjoy teaching about it.  As I drive across Nebraska, usually on Interstate 80, I think about settlers walking across the prairie to find the perfect place to call home.  It must have been an unforgettable experience.  The physical strength and determination to complete such a journey puts me in awe.

We stopped at two tourist attractions.  On the way to Colorado we stayed overnight in Kearney.  Before going to the hotel for the night we visited The Great Platte Road Archway.  Through various travels I have gone under this archway many times.  I decided after many journeys this would be the one where I went inside and toured the arch.  Well worth our stop.  The history of traveling across the prairie was very interesting and the DSC_0254museum exhibits were very well put together.  The experience really made you think about the journey those early travelers made and the sacrifices to find the perfect homestead.

DSC_0262As you walk south through the archway (your really cannot tell you are walking across Interstate 80) you are following a timeline of travel west.  First the covered wagon, then the stagecoach.  As you turn back
north through the archway you come upon the building of the Transcontinental Railroad and the freedom of travel brought by the automobile becoming affordable for all to purchase.
